3 Ways to Overcome Distractions.

Better thinking, Better habits and Better results!

Doesn’t it seem like there is background noise around us ALL of the time. It’s getter harder and harder to tune out and focus with so many distractions everywhere. Ugh, with dings, rings, and notifications going off constantly it’s no wonder that we feel pulled in a hundred directions in any given moment.  We are constantly interrupted.

That said, it’s not impossible to focus. Before getting frustrated or being secretly taken over by those distractions try these three strategies.

1.) Start a morning routines – Start the day with an intention to prioritize, get organized and be focused. It sets the tone for the whole day. The über successful people do it and it works. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. The greats like Ray Dalio, Richard Branson, Elon Musk, and Jerry Seinfeld all had one. And it’s most helpful to breakdown goal like this one into smaller segments. I have been talking about this for years. One hour in the morning might sound daunting so segment the time into chunks of 20 minutes at a time. Here is the breakdown that I am using: 20-20-20.

The first 20 minute phase is to awaken your breath and begin to move. I like to alternate between fire breath (breathing rhythmically quickly as you inhale and exhale through the nose) and slow steady paced breathing (inhale to a count of 4, hold to a count of 4, exhale to a count of 4 and hold the exhale for a count of 4). I will often take a walk outside and incorporate the breath work at the same time). Other times I jump on my rebounder.

The second phase in the next 20 minutes  includes writing in my journal, listening to a few minutes of an audio book while taking notes or writing in reverse the type of day I want to experience.

Lastly, the third phase is the SEAL it in segment. I close my eyes and meditation on gratitude while sending blessings out into the world. It feels invigorating to add both of those components to my mediation.  I like to also focus on the contribution I want to make in the world.

Now I feel jazzed and ready to enter into the world equipped with fuel to conquer with the next 2 fired up strategies.

2.) I schedule everything. If it makes it into my calendar I will do it and if it doesn’t I must likely won’t. I am amazed at how many people skip this step. If you want to keep distractions at bay you need to commit your time deliberately (otherwise outer circumstance will rave havoc on your time). Because 90% of my calendar is already scheduled in advance I use this time to add more details to it and review, confirm and think about the details.I also think about the obstacles that may come up so that I can be super prepared for them if they do.  When I mentally walk through issues that could occur I can dress reverse the problem solving in advance.

3.) Get the highest priority project done first.  It feels incredible when you do. I actually wrote this blog post directly after the two steps above the day before it was due to make sure it actually got done. Decide which projects are MUSTS and do them during the first part of the day. Things you put off often never get done.

Pick the most important task and do it then just in case you do get distracted. Over time you will love the feeling so much you will do whatever it takes to get apply the 3 strategies to overcome distractions daily!!
