How Corporate America Is Using It: 

It’s not uncommon these days to have a mindfulness practitioner come in to lead a 15 minute brain enhancing meditation practice right before an important company meeting. Google does it on a regular basis. The health insurance company, Aetna started offering a similar technique to their employees after their CEO,  Mark T. Bertolini, had a near death experience during a ski accident. He started incorporating this brain power boosting technique to get off his pain medication and it worked.

My Journey of Discovery: 

Ten years ago, while working in the pharmaceutical industry, I started using this mind boosting technique and was blown away by the incredible results. I got 10x more done with more efficiency and less stress. Self sabotage and the negative self talk that tried to convince me that I wasn’t worthy of a great life started to vanish. It was so powerful, so much so, that I left corporate America to teach and coach based on this technology.

5 Brainwave States; Energy and Frequency:

Each of the 5 brain waves states has a frequency that can actually be measured. They are known as Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta, and Gamma. Each of these frequencies play a key role in achieving personal and professional success whether you know they exist or not.

Your brain is consistently producing waves in all of the frequencies but one of them will dominate at any one time.

  • Beta Brainwave State- normal waking consciousness

Beta is the state you are in most of the time. Whenever you are thinking, talking and communicating, your mind is in Beta. Beta waves have a frequency of 14–28 cycles per second and is associated with alertness, focus, and all of our five senses (smelling, tasting, hearing, feeling, seeing).

If you constantly stay in this state without spending time in the other 4 zones you’ll strain your “thinking mind” which will eventually cause major irritability, anxiousness, and sheer exhaustion. Your mind needs rest in order to access the higher faculties of your mind (imagination, creativity, insight, problem solving).

  • Alpha Brainwave State- the bridge to the subconscious mind. 

Alpha is the BRIDGE to the subconscious mind. The Alpha frequency produces a very relaxed, peaceful state of mind. People who rarely spend time in this frequency will find it challenging to be creative or to learn and retain new information. That’s the main reason why it is so important to integrate new ideas. If you continue to squeeze in more without allowing adequate time for the new ideas to absorb and cross from the conscious mind into the subconscious mind you won’t be able to retrieve it when needed later. This is the number #1 mistake entrepreneurs make in their business. Squeeze, Push. Add more and more without INTEGRATION.

Here is one exercise you can use to access an Alpha state.

Begin by gently closing your eyes. Give your mind the directive to relax, deeply relax. Focus on your breathe and notice as you inhale in and exhale out. Now imagine seeing the rich, vivid color, red, See it with one of the most powerful faculties of your mind, your imaging capability. Now add form to it. See a snap shot of yourself walking through a garden of red roses. Bring into your awareness the aroma and scent of a rose. Picture yourself reaching over to touch one of the petals and feel the silky smooth texture in your mind. Allow your thoughts to linger there for an extended moment to activate all of your senses. This type of exercise primes the mind to go to the next level, the theta brain wave state where accelerated learning and integration takes place.

 

A Theta brain wave state is a very deep state of calm and relaxation. This is the state that is induced during hypnosis in order to embed commands by using autosuggestion to change behaviors, create new habits, and elicit desired results. It’s the super powerful NINJA boosting technique that harnesses the all- mighty power of the subconscious mind to direct the sometimes sluggish conscious mind into forward moving action.

The subconscious mind is the command station and hub of your attitudes, beliefs and behavior. In a theta brain state limiting beliefs melt away and new empowered beliefs become imprinted into your mind. Thoughts of frustration and unworthiness dissolve and new thoughts like “I am worthy and deserving” emerge.

It also boosts aspects of the personality that doesn’t optimize well in a beta brain wave state such as creativity, confidence, courage, and deep listening. These desirable traits lead to better communication, less friction in the work place and getting more done without the health risks associated with stress.

  • Delta Brainwave States- deep, dreamless sleep

This brain wave state is associated with the unconscious or super conscious mind. It’s experienced during deep sleep and transcendental meditation. This is the slowest of the brain wave frequencies where your body and mind is repairing, renewing and rejuvenating itself. It’s also why it is critical to get a good night’s sleep of 7-8 hours each night.  And at the same time you are also releasing growth hormone during this stage, a HUGH perk since this is the hormone that is associated with anti aging and a more youthful, overall look. (double YAY).

I want to note here that if you fall asleep with the TV or news on, chatting on your cell phone or emailing on your computer then you will actually block delta brain wave states from activating and do the complete opposite. Your mind will stay actively in the beta brain wave states most of the night creating more and more stress on both mentally in the mind and physically on the body.

Delta brain wave states are necessary to neutralize the Beta brain states of being so highly physically and mentally active during the day.

  • Gamma Brainwave State- peak concentration and extremely high levels of cognitive functioning

The Gamma brainwave is a new discovered state.  In this frequency we learn at an accelerated rate and process lots of information. Gamma waves stimulate the release of Beta endorphins (think about getting a ton of  things done without the panic, anxiety or stress). They are associated with higher mental activity. In this state, your brainwaves cycle between 40 and 5,000 cycles a second.

Think of this state as being active when you have a tight deadline and you are super intense, focused, and have expanded your capacity to do 10X more than usual. People with very high levels of gamma activity are exceptionally intelligent, compassionate, happy and have excellent memories and self control with very high IQ scores. Elite athletes, top-notch musicians and high achievers in all fields produce far more gamma waves than average.

As you understand these 5 brain wave states and learn how to throttle between each one of them with  deliberate intention your life will grow exponentially.
