Going ALL IN for an entrepreneur means playing to win vs holding back a part of you. It’s a concept I became introduced when I launched my business coaching practice as as solo-entrepreneur. It’s a decision to put 100% of your energy into the success of your business.
It means playing like it’s the Super Bowl even if you are playing your first game of the year. Going ALL in is the key strategy of Elan Musk, Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson. They give their goals everything they got. I first heard about this concept at the very first business summit I attended over 10 years ago. Something inside of me rang true.
Burning the Boats
They said “If you really want to succeed as an entrepreneur you have to burn your boats.” The concept of burning boats traces back to one of history’s most inspiring stories in 1519. Herman Cortes led an expedition of 600 Spaniards, 16 or so horses, and 11 boats to Mexico. The goal was to capture the treasure said to be held there. Once they arrived, Cortes made history by burning his own ships so there could be NO turning back. It came down to live or die. It no longer meant they could win and became they MUST win!
Because there was no exit strategy they had to give it all they had just to save their own lives and were successful in their conquest of Aztec empire. The mindset philosophy is to take away any other options other than succeeding. Burning the boats means you have to go full throttle in without being able to turn back.
Your Own Life and Business
Where in your life as an entrepreneur have you hesitated or held back? Where are you playing small to play safe? Are you hiding behind your shoulds, coulds, or mights? What is that costing you?
If you really want to win then you have to go all in. Giving it all you have might mean you could fail but all great leaders have had to embrace that possibility. And when the set backs happen you pick yourself up from your bootstraps and go all in again. Now you have even more information to help you see even when the clouds of doubt roll in.
When success is the ONLY option, you will find a will keep going until you get there.
